Pawrents Guide: Dog Grooming at Home

If you don’t have enough time to schedule a meeting with your favorite stylist, that’s no problem! You can do your dog grooming at home so they can always look their best. Don’t forget to bond with them because it’ll be a good way for both of you to relax and enjoy the day.

We’ve got a few tips for you to always keep them fresh and dapper. Read on…

Dog Grooming at Home

1- Dog Bathing

Your dog is going to require less frequent baths depending on how active they are. If they’re staying home, it’s okay to skip bathing them as often. However, if your pet regularly goes out and gets dirty, it may be necessary to bathe them more frequently.

If you use quality pet shampoo, followed by conditioner, dogs can be bathed with frequency.

The frequency of bathing depends on the type of breed, but cats don’t need to be frequently bathed. Cats– other than breeds that produce a lot of oil, such as the Sphynx–don’t require frequent bathing. It’s not harmful for them.

Starting with behind the ears and working your way back toward the tail, don’t forget to wash your pet’s face last. Once you have washed and rinsed their body completely, rinse again. Yes, two rinses are necessary.

We have wrote an article about How to Improve Your Dog Skin and Coat

Using shampoo and conditioner specific for animals, followed by always rinsing it out of the fur, Conner explains some remedies for pet hair-related problems.

First wash the dog with pet shampoo, mix it with warm water in a cup or bowl. Then dip a sponge into the dilution of shampoo and use it to evenly apply the product to the coat.

2- Nail Trimming

Dogs and cats need their nails trimmed once a month to avoid infections and damaging surfaces.

It’s always nice to have a quality set of nail clippers that are easy to grip and handle when trimming nails by yourself for ease.

  • Set a mood for your pets when trimming their nails and pick a quiet spot where they will feel relaxed, like on the couch. You can also try keeping a toy or treat in your palm to get their attention.
  • Make sure to make a clean cut on the tip of the nail and reward your pet for good behaviour.

3- Dog Brushing

Brushing your pet is a great way to bond. Plus, brushing removes loose hair and tangles. Frequent brushing is three minutes a day or longer at one time a week.

Groom your pet correctly with the right tool, such as a slicker brush for long haired and do it in the right way.

Effective brushing includes brushing from the skin to the tips of the hair, all over the body. A common mistake pet parents make is just brushing the first layer of their pet’s coats.

We have tried this Aumuca brush and it worked well with our dogs

Spots to pay extra attention to:

  • Behind the ears
  • Collar or harness area
  • The “underarm” area under the front legs
  • The “tuck up” area in front of the rear legs
  • Paws
  • Tail

Dogs’ fur should be brushed in long strokes, starting at the skin and working toward the hair tips. If there is an area that the brush cannot penetrate, use your hands to work it thoroughly.

If you want to reduce the struggle of brushing pets, apply a coat spray before using your brush or groomer.

4- Dog Hair Trimming

Don’t shave your pet’s head unless you want them to have a bad hair day!

Grooming your pet can be a tedious task, but taking care of some of their hair yourself helps like if there’s excess hair in between their paw pads, but remember as pet parents we’re not experts in grooming so don’t give them a full hair cut – always leave it to the experts.

Keep your pets groomed with a little DIY care at home. Your pet will thank you for the bonding time, and you won’t have to worry about long waits in a busy grooming salon.
