Guide to Road Trip with Your Dog

If you are a dog parent, you probably are aware of the struggles that come with traveling with your doggo, especially if it’s a road trip with your dog. Long drives can tire humans out, and dogs are no exception.

However, we want to make your road trip experiences with your dog more pleasant, so let’s dive right into the tips for road tripping with your dog.

1. Bring the necessities

I cannot stress this point enough. Having all the necessities in reach is crucial for a good road trip with your four-legged friend. Following are some of the necessities that you cannot skip on.

  • Water bowl/water. Go for spill-proof bowls that will allow your dog to be able to drink water throughout the drive. Buy one here
  • Leash and collar/harness. This one is obvious. It’s also a good idea to make sure they have a tag on their collar. Buy one here
  • Vaccination records/health certificate. This is a requirement of some hotels, and in case you need to take your pup to the vet in an emergency, you should have the medical certificates with you.
  • Poop bags. Obviously, we cannot stop our doggies from doing that. Better be prepared to handle it. Buy one here
  • Towel/blanket. A towel is always handy for cleaning purposes. A blanket is good for your dog to lay on in the car.
  • Dog bed (if there’s room). Your dog will appreciate comfort.
  • Treats. Bring treats that will keep your dog busy for long periods of time. Buy treats here
  • Favorite toys. This needs no explanation, right?
  • Enough food to last the duration of the trip. You can bring food that is compact so you don’t have space problems. Make sure it is in an airtight container.
  • First Aid Kit. In case of emergencies.

2. Get their energy out

Let your dog tire themselves. Take them out on a walk, play fetch with them. Make sure that they exert their energy. This will help them stay calm and relaxed during the road trip.

3. Give them mental stimulation

We need to focus on mental exhaustion as well, and not just physical exercise. Have a training session, work on a new trick, do something that makes them use their brain.

You can keep toys with you that involve mental stimulation. Read our guide on the best interactive dog toys to keep your dog tired

4. Stop every few hours

Let your doggo stretch their legs, go poop, give them water, etc. You can walk around with them, give them a treat if it isn’t meal time when you stop.

Safety Measures

You should take extra precautions when driving with your furry best friend.

A few main safety measures are the following;

  • Don’t roll the window down all the way
  • Strap them into a crash-tested safety harness
  • Put them in a crash-tested kennel
