Local vets warn of deadly outbreak of canine disease distemper in the UAE
After outbreaks of distemper, people are being urged not to go out and have their dogs socialize. Veterinarians are telling dog owners to get their pets vaccinated to prevent the spread of this disease.
Many pet owners across Dubai have been diagnosing their dogs with distemper, a virus that is highly infectious and often fatal.
Make sure your dog’s vaccination is up to date and avoid contact with other dogs while out walking them.
Distemper is a highly contagious, often deadly, multisystemic (affecting multiple organs) disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems in animals such as ferrets, skunks, and raccoons.
With all infectious diseases, clinical signs can vary. The main signs of symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting, thick yellow fluid from the eyes and nose, cough, and in more severe cases seizures and neurological symptoms. Dogs that make a full recovery from the disease are often left with persistent nervous muscular twitches and recurring seizures.
