In the bustling industrial area of Abu Dhabi, where stray animals often go unnoticed and uncared for, a group of passionate volunteers has come together to create The Mussafah Dog Project (MDP). This small but mighty team is on a mission to feed the hungry, care for the injured, provide shelter for the vulnerable, and control the stray population.
In this interview article, we have the privilege of delving into their inspiring work, challenges, heartwarming experiences, and how the community can get involved in supporting their efforts.
The Mussafah Dog Project is a small group of volunteers that come together to care for the stray animals in Mussafah. Their mission is to feed the hungry, care for the injured, provide shelter for the vulnerable, and control the stray population.
Most of the volunteers at MDP are pet owners themselves and have a deep love and compassion for animal welfare. They strive to make a difference in the lives of the stray animals who often go unnoticed and uncared for.
MDP was founded many years ago by a group of dedicated and passionate volunteers who wanted to make a difference in animal welfare. Their vision was, and still is today, to help control the animal population in Mussafah and find loving homes for as many cats and dogs as possible.
On average, MDP has around 10-15 active volunteers at a given time. Some volunteers participate in the feeding program, while others contribute through social media marketing, fostering, screening potential adoptive homes, and transporting animals. Another team focuses on trap, neuter, and return efforts.
MDP concentrates its efforts in Mussafah, an area with a high population of stray dogs and cats. With approximately 20 feeding stations, they provide sustenance for a few hundred dogs and cats.
One of their most heartwarming experiences is successfully rehoming dogs both nationally and internationally, such as Nala, who now enjoys kayaking in the UK, and Polly, who is about to embark on a journey to Canada.
Caring for stray animals in Mussafah comes with numerous challenges. Speeding traffic poses a constant danger, and the scorching desert heat leaves the animals dehydrated and vulnerable.
The risk of falling into the wrong hands is also a concern. Additionally, dumped animals face dangers from unfamiliar surroundings, heavy traffic, and potential attacks from packs of strays.
MDP is grateful for the support they receive from kind individuals in the community. They rely on donations of food, whether in-kind or through their food supplier or Amazon wish list.
Support also comes in the form of sponsoring animals for their trap, neuter, and return program and assisting with veterinary expenses. They greatly appreciate any resources offered, including food, blankets, leashes, and bowls.
MDP encourages their followers to spread awareness of their cause by sharing their posts on Facebook and Instagram. They welcome passionate animal lovers to volunteer in their feeding program, sponsor animals for their trap, neuter, and return program, and provide veterinary assistance when needed.
They also rely on the community to foster and adopt the animals, giving them the loving homes they deserve. If you’re interested in getting involved, you can reach out to The Mussafah Dog Project through their social media channels:
