Leash Up and Avoid a Fine of AED 5,000 in Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Municipality has recently issued an important reminder regarding the safety and well-being of our furry friends. To ensure the safety of everyone, the municipality has implemented a policy that imposes an AED 5,000 fine for those found walking their dogs without a leash.

This measure aims to promote responsible pet ownership and maintain harmony within the capital.

This warning is part of an effort by the municipality to raise awareness about animal welfare. Dr. Saeed Mohammed Al Rumaithi, head of public safety at the Abu Dhabi Municipality, emphasized that the campaign aims to remind pet owners and dealers about the law and the importance of taking good care of animals.

Abandoning pets on the streets can result in a fine of AED 2,000, he added.

The municipality’s awareness drive also focuses on ensuring the responsible ownership of pets and protecting endangered species. Al Rumaithi highlighted that businesses caught selling protected species may face fines of up to AED 10,000. Additionally, selling a sick animal can lead to a fine of AED 3,000.

Since the introduction of regulations in 2018, pet ownership and healthcare have specific requirements outlined by the municipality. These regulations specify the criteria for obtaining registration certificates for acquiring, possessing, and accommodating animals.

The law prohibits keeping animals, except cats and dogs, in villas and apartments without a municipality permit. Residents without a permit can be fined AED 5,000.

Pet dealers are mandated to ensure regular veterinary check-ups for their animals under the new regulations. Furthermore, pet shops must adhere to the rule that selling animals to individuals under the age of 18 is illegal unless accompanied by an adult. Violating this policy can result in a fine of AED 3,000.

Pet owners play a vital role in upholding these regulations and promoting responsible dog ownership. By keeping their furry companions on leashes during walks, they demonstrate respect for their community and contribute to maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in public areas.

So let us all remember: when it comes to walking our beloved dogs in Abu Dhabi, leashing them is not just good practice – it’s the law.
