Istanbul Airport’s Therapy Dogs Calming Passengers

Five new team members are compassionately traversing the bustling corridors of one of the world’s most active transportation hubs, these Therapy dogs are aiming to create a paw-sitively stress-free travel experience for passengers dealing with anxiety.

Say hello to Istanbul Airport’s therapy dogs, ever-ready to provide support through snuggles, belly rubs, and affectionate kisses.

All members of the “Therapy Dog Team” are certified professionals trained to comfort humans, having undergone months of preparation and intensive training to adapt to various environments and stimuli.

According to Kadir Demirtas, Istanbul Airport’s customer experience manager, ensuring the dogs’ safety and full adaptation to all surroundings is paramount. Kuki, a Lagotto Romagnolo, leads the team with diligence, although he also enjoys breaks and occasional playtime.

Each dog’s temperament determines their daily work hours, as explained by the team’s veterinarian, who oversees their well-being. The dogs, complete with official badges and uniforms, operate under a structured schedule, primarily during peak travel hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Alita, a border collie and Kuki’s teammate, impresses with her intense focus and calming influence. Volkan Gul, Alita’s dedicated handler, notes her ability to help people relax, surrounded by a constant stream of travelers eager to offer her pets and attention.

Given the positive feedback from passengers, airport officials plan to expand the pilot project, recognizing the valuable role these therapy dogs play in enhancing the airport experience for everyone.
