If you have ever become hungry in the middle of a meeting or in front of someone, you know how disruptive it can be. But when you hear your dog stomach making sound, it seems even more unusual.

We get a lot of questions about common stomach noises in dogs. So, today we’ll answer those questions and more and dogs’ stomachs actually make all sorts of noises, just like us hoomans.

Fact: The scientific term for what your dog’s stomach sounds like is borborygmi. Basically this means gas moving from one part of the intestines to another.

And, Gas moving through the intestines can result in a variety of noises.

Now, the “WHY?”

So we know that your dog’s stomach noises are due to gas moving through the intestines – but why does this happen? And what causes the noise to increase so that it is loud and happening often?

One reason for increased intestinal noise is that it may signal the onset of a stomach ailment, but not always. There are many other potential explanations for this event, such as:

  • If your dog is hungry, the noise you hear might be coming from a starvation hunger. Try increasing the size of its meals or how often they get fed.
  • Dogs often eat things that don’t make them sick, but if they do it could cause gurgling and other noises.
  • If your dog is making loud stomach noises, they might have diarrhea. It’s a good idea to take them potty, just in case.
  • A history of the use of GAS
  • Dogs create noise as gas moves through their intestines. The same is true for humans. However, in this case it might be a symptom of hyperactive digestive cycles rather than an issue with the dog’s diet or air intake.
  • Eating highly processed and high carb food can cause intestinal irritation and gas.
  • When your dog eats something it can’t digest, they may experience stomach cramps and make strange noises. This reaction is the intestines trying to process the particles in the stomach.
  • Dogs with inflammatory bowel disease and SIBO often have gas and a noisy tummy.
  • Parasites and bacterial infections are common causes of upset stomachs. These generally come with other symptoms that make them easier to spot.

If your pet’s stomach seems to change suddenly, you should evaluate the following:

  • Is my dog sick?
  • Did you make any changes to your dog’s eating schedule, food type, or introduce any new treats?
  • Have you traveled anywhere with your dog lately?

If your dog has a generally noisy tummy, but is otherwise active and healthy, you may want to increase the frequency of feedings and make sure they are eating the right amounts of food.

  • Avoid free feeding pets
  • Fresh Water!!!!
  • Adding a gut-supporting supplement

When in doubt, call your vet or take them in for an examination.
