Firstly, remember, digging is a natural behavior shown by dogs. Secondly, it’s perfectly natural to be frustrated if your doggie keeps doing it at home, and possibly ruining the appearance inside your home.
Let’s go over tips on how to minimize digging from your dog.
One of the reasons behind digging is that your doggo is bored, and maybe not getting enough attention from you.
You can help in decreasing your pup’s boredom by;
The key is to keep your fur baby engaged, and hold yourself accountable for training them.
Dogs are pretty energetic animals but they need to exert their energy at the right places. A tired dog won’t think of digging through your carpet in order to drain their energy.
They should get the right amount of exercise, both indoors, and outdoors.
The more your dog has exercised, the more energy they have spent on something non-destructive.
Since you cannot have eyes on your adorable dog all the time, you should maximize the supervision to ensure minimal digging habits.
You can use fencing to keep your doggo off the area of your yard that you don’t want to risk. However, if you want your dog to fulfill their digging desires, then build them a digging pit. You can train your dog to use the digging pit by hiding their favorite toy in it. Encourage them to find the toy, and reward them when they do find it.
You will have to be vigilant in training your dog that the digging pit is where they are supposed to dig while the rest of the yard is a no dig-zone. This can, again, be achieved by supervision and proper instructions.
If they lose attention from the digging pit, redirect them. Reassure them that it is okay to dig in the pit, but not anywhere else. Make the pit attractive by putting in their favorite toys, treats, etc.
Don’t panic if your dog has a digging habit. The right training coupled with patience goes a long way.
