To import your pet dog to UAE, you need to be mindful of three laws: Ministerial Decree 204 (Import of Cats and Dogs Law), Federal Law 22 (Possession of Dangerous Animals Law), and the amendment for Ministry Decree 190 (Amended Possession of Dangerous Animals Law). Due to different restrictions, there are certain things that one needs to do when transporting animals within UAE.

It becomes difficult to import your pet to the UAE without the required authorization. You must first obtain pre-approval from Ministry of Climate Change & Environment before importing two of your personal dogs per year.

Article 4 of the Import of Cats and Dogs Law states that an individual needs to obtain relevant pre-approvals from the Ministry and the pet must be shipped as per IATA protocols. The said article also states that the pets should have permanent electronic ID and the same needs to be matched with the details mentioned in the medical certificate. Further, it is stated that a pet needs to have a microchip and its medical certificate needs to contain all the details related to breed, age, vaccinations etc.

As it is illegal to bring dogs into the UAE without abiding by the relevant guidelines, it is important for pet owners to comply with all local laws before an import. The owner needs to identify when he/she can visit UAE and how long they are there. All veterinary requirements will be fulfilled in accordance with the law. The pet owner also has the right to contact quarantine or immigration prior to their visit for more information about their rights and obligations.

Article 11 of the Import of Cats and Dogs Law states that the medical certificate issued by the country from where the pet will be imported needs to be in accordance with the format mentioned in Schedule 3 of the said law. However, if you are signing an import agreement making it clear that no more pets are accepted in your housing scheme, your veterinarian will write the statement ‘This animal is free of communicable disease’ which is required for some types of imports.

To import your dog to the UAE, you must complete all the vaccinations listed in Schedule 4 of the Imports of Cats and Dogs Law before arriving in the country. These vaccines include rabies vaccination, CDV vaccination, canine parvovirus, infectious canine hepatitis, and leptospirosis.
