Dog Paw Licking – Is is a Concerns?

Dog paw licking for any number of different reasons, though they are not typically a sign that dogs are sick.

  • Allergies that irritate the skin around the paws
  • The dogs in cities often injure themselves on the hard pavement.
  • Self-injury is a way to relieve stress, but often results in making the person feel worse.
  • A foreign object such as a leaf, pebble, or piece of glass that could be causing discomfort.
  • An anxious dog may lick their paws to relieve stress, much like we bite our nails.
  • Boredom. If not stimulated, a dog will find other ways to entertain themselves like licking their paws.
  • Skin damage can be the result of a bee sting or walking through layers of ice-melt on sidewalks.

It is not abnormal for a dog to lick their paws once or twice every day as they groom. However, if this licking is excessive, it should be addressed and dealt with.

When should a dog parent consult a veterinarian for paw-licking?

When you notice the following, it may be time!

  • Excessive paw licking
  • Licking a particular area all the time
  • Paw licking all day
  • Paw licking even when told not to multiple times

If you notice red staining or a particular wound, these are reasons to take your pet to the veterinarian.
