Bobi, the oldest dog in history has passed at 31 years and 163 days
In the world of remarkable dogs, one name stands out, and that is Bobi. Born on May 11, 1992, in Conqueiros, Leiria, Portugal, this purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo was more than just a family pet. In his remarkable journey, he not only captured the hearts of his caretakers but also etched his name in the annals of history.
Tragedy struck soon after Bobi’s birth. He was one of four male puppies born in a humble outbuilding where his caretaker’s family stored wood. Sadly, his brothers didn’t share the same fate. Due to the reluctance of Costa’s father to care for more animals, they were all buried alive shortly after birth. Bobi was the lone survivor. His exceptional survival story began as he cleverly blended in with the wood, escaping his father’s attention during that fateful moment.
A Remarkable Record Setter
Bobi’s incredible journey was destined for greatness. On February 2, 2023, he achieved a feat that no other dog in recorded history had ever accomplished. At that moment, Bobi was officially declared the first dog to reach the age of 30. But he didn’t stop there; he continued to break records as the oldest dog ever known.
Bobi’s longevity was astounding. He lived to the remarkable age of 31 years and 163 days. This incredible achievement shattered the previous record held by Bluey, a female Australian Cattle Dog, who lived for 29 years and 5 months, a record that had held for over 83 years.
Despite his advanced age, Bobi remained in reasonably good health. He might have had difficulty walking and faced challenges with his eyesight, but his spirit remained unbroken. In 2018, he showed incredible resilience when he collapsed due to breathing difficulties.
Bobi’s owners, the Costas, credited his longevity to a peaceful and nurturing environment, as well as his diet of fresh food, a departure from the conventional kibble. Genetics might have played a role in his extraordinary lifespan, as Bobi’s mother also lived a remarkable 18 years.
A Legendary Celebration and Legacy
To mark his 31st birthday, a celebration like no other was held. One hundred guests were invited to commemorate this extraordinary dog’s life. The day was filled with merriment, as they indulged in meat and fish while a troupe of dancers performed in his honor.
