We’re still on the go with finding inspirational adoption stories from our followers and this week we’re featuring the story of Nox and his paw parents.
Nox rescued us, just as we rescued him
Although we are avid dog lovers and have grown up with dogs right from our childhood days, we only had three rescued cats at home over the past eight years of our married life.
We always wanted a dog, but we were waiting for the right time. Turns out when the “right time” came around, the universe brought us someone who needed us as much as we needed him. That’s where our journey with Nox began.
It’s very simple. We’ve never agreed with breeding or buying dogs, especially when there are so many beautiful souls out there in need of a loving home.
From when we were kids, we have only ever rescued or adopted animals. They range from mice to chickens, to rabbits, hawks, squirrels, a crow, and of course the many cats and dogs, who made their way into our homes and our hearts.
It just so happened that over a period of two weeks in March 2021, all we could speak about was adopting a dog. We spoke about it so much that we were ready to visit the various adoption agencies in the UAE.
But the universe (the Internet) eavesdropped on our conversations and did its thing. Before we knew it, our social media feeds were filled with posts about dogs up for adoption.
One specific post caught our attention. It was about someone looking for help with a litter of tiny puppies. These young ones had been orphaned as their mother had died in a car accident on an Ajman highway.
Within an hour of reading that post, we were in Ajman looking down at the litter in a cardboard box on the side of the road. Although our hearts wanted to pick up all three puppies we could only bring Nox home. His sisters went on to be taken in by a local adoption agency.
Nox was the least active of his litter but for some reason, we were drawn to him. He looked so tiny, helpless, and fragile. He was all of 1 kilo of skin and bones and fit within the palm of our hands.
He slept all the way home, on the drive from Ajman to Dubai, and seemed to be having very adventurous dreams.
We had no idea what breed he was or what he would turn out to be. All we knew was that his mother was a desert dog, and no one knew who his dad was. Within the first month, people around us placed bets on whether he was a Doberman, a German Shepherd, a Beagle, or a Husky … Time – the greatest teller of truth – told us that he was PERFECT!
The first and greatest change was the sudden and surprisingly swift change to a good work-life balance. We started leaving work on time, finding the purpose to work hard and finish what needed to be done within our working hours. We began spending a lot more time at home with the family, and with Nox and the cats.
When we went out and about, we began enjoying nature – the desert, the beaches, and the mountains – around the UAE so much more than the city life, because of Nox.
Most importantly – and something we never expected – was how good Nox was for our mental health. He pulled us out of a dark place post-pandemic and gave us a sense of purpose and happiness, with something silly to laugh about every single day. Going back to what we said earlier, he rescued us as much as we rescued him!
It’s quite interesting to see how well-recognized Nox has become over the past few months. There are so many times that we take him out to new places, and people who we’ve never met before call him by name and play with him.
It’s also so heart-warming to see and be a part of such an active dog-loving community in the UAE – something we were completely unaware of when we moved to Dubai a few years ago. Here’s to hoping that Dubai continues to become increasingly dog-friendly! Cheers.
