A Lifelong Shelter Dog Receives an Unanticipated Note in the Search for a Family

A gentle senior shelter dog with soulful eyes, Snoopy longs for a forever home where he can be cherished.

As he yearned for a loving family to call his own, Snoopy charmed volunteers at the Benton-Franklin Humane Society (BFHS) for nearly two years.

The shelter dog Snoopy’s journey to finding his forever home has been unexpectedly prolonged, which leaves many puzzled despite his endearing qualities.

As a senior dog and a cushing’s disease patient, Snoopy stands out among the plethora of dogs at BFHS. This condition has affected his hearing and vision, which makes him extra special to the BFHS volunteers, even though potential adopters haven’t seen the same effects.

In an Instagram reel, BFHS volunteer Julie Saraceno said, “This causes him problems with his hearing and vision. He’s also a senior dog. Because of these things, he’s overlooked.”

While his shelter mates found new families, Snoopy remained in the shelter, his resilience unwavering. Volunteers like Saraceno hoped Snoopy would soon find a loving foster home or forever home.

Both Saraceno and fellow volunteers were disheartened that this kind and aged pup still awaited a family after reaching his 600th day at the shelter. However, despite this, he maintained his trademark positivity, finding joy in the simple pleasures of life and his interactions with staff at BFHS.

Although Snoopy has been a shelter dog for over 600+ days, he still finds joy in the little things, Saraceno wrote on Instagram. “He loves being outside, soaking up the sun, wandering around the play yard, and sniffing the grass.”

As Snoopy’s infectious spirit caught on with BFHS’s social media followers, some submitted adoption applications, while others sent thoughtful gifts, showering him with love. Among these gestures, one stood out as particularly heartwarming.

Saraceno’s social media fan and dog enthusiast, Emmy, 11 years old, wrote Snoopy a heartfelt letter. She wrote, “Dear Snoopy, I’m wishing you [the] best of luck finding a home… Don’t forget that [disability] does not mean you are disposed [of]. Your face tells me you are a kind soul. Once again, I wish you the best of luck in the future. I wish I could adopt you myself… Hugs, Emmy.”

In the face of Emmy’s sincere words and the generosity of all the gifts, Snoopy felt a deep sense of love. However, his age and medical condition demanded a specific type of home.

A local foster-based rescue, Forgotten Dogs Rescue, offered Snoopy a lifeline after an incredible 660 days at BFHS. Lastly, Snoopy would trade his kennel for a couch, a small but significant change. They offered to find him a loving foster home while he continued his search for his forever family.

The BFHS community, which had grown to love Snoopy, gathered at the door to offer hugs and well wishes as he departed.

Having been placed in a foster home by Forgotten Dogs Rescue, Snoopy is enjoying the comforts of home life once more. Saraceno shared, “Snoopy is making himself right at home. And he is catching up on sleep.”

Both BFHS and Forgotten Dog Rescue look forward to the day Snoopy finds his perfect home. In the meantime, they take comfort in knowing he has embraced a wonderful life, and that his brightest days are yet to come.
