A Dubai Vet Shares the Importance of Understanding Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS)

Like everywhere in the world, brachycephalic dog breeds are gaining popularity in the UAE because they look adorable.

However, there is a downside to this look: Flat-faced dog breeds like French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Chihuahuas, and Boxers, which have been bred for a long time to have a nose as short as possible and a small, round face, often suffer from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome, also called BOAS, due to the shape of their heads and narrowed upper airways.

To shed light on this crucial issue, we’ve collaborated with Blue Oasis Veterinary Clinic to provide expert advice on BOAS. In this article, Dr. Matus Ubrezi, DVM, a Veterinary Orthopedic Surgeon at Blue Oasis Vet Clinic, explains what BOAS is, how it affects your pet, and what can be done to manage this condition.

Understanding BOAS with Dr. Matus Ubrezi

Flat-faced dog breeds are undeniably charming, but their unique facial structure comes with significant health challenges. Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) is a condition resulting from the anatomical structure of these breeds, which causes obstructed airways.

What Causes BOAS?

BOAS occurs because of the small muzzle with extra tissue in the oropharynx, which obstructs breathing. This results in the typical snoring noise and reduced air intake, leading to a permanent lack of oxygen in the blood.

Over time, this can lead to various complications, including collapsing trachea, larynx paralysis, and heart failure due to stress on the cardiovascular system. These risks are elevated in areas with high temperatures, like the UAE.

Signs to Watch For

Owners of short-nosed dogs must watch for signs of fatigue, difficulty breathing, and loud snoring. Early recognition of these signs is crucial for timely intervention.

Tips for Managing BOAS

  1. Prevent Obesity: Do not allow your pet to become obese, as it drastically worsens the condition.
  2. Exercise in Cooler Hours: Walk your dog only in the cooler morning and evening hours to prevent overheating.
  3. Moderate Play: Be careful with fetch and catch games to avoid overstraining your dog.

Veterinary Intervention

Dr. Ubrezi emphasizes the importance of veterinary assessment and intervention:

  1. Health Assessment: After assessing your dog’s general health, we evaluate the size and thickness of the airways and soft palate, and the degree of nasal obstruction. This exam may require sedation.
  2. Diagnosis and Surgery: If BOAS is confirmed, we conduct a thorough clinical exam, blood work, and coagulatory tests to minimize peri- and postoperative risks. If your dog is fit for anesthesia, we propose surgical intervention. The surgery involves shortening the soft palate and extending the nasal openings, performed by our oropharyngeal surgeon, assisted by our experienced team of nurses.
  3. Postoperative Care: After the surgery, your pet must be offered a soft diet and wear a protective collar for a few days. This surgical intervention significantly improves your dog’s ability to breathe and allows it to live a less stressful, happier, and safer life.

Dr. Ubrezi concludes, “While the surgery can only help with the congenital conditions and not cure them, it greatly enhances your dog’s quality of life. If you think your dog is affected by BOAS, don’t wait to book an appointment!”
